'I commenced a work by Professor Nichol on Astronomy, for thou must know that we (A.M.B., Jane, and I), feeling the unutterable darkness which now reigns in our minds as to the most sublime of the sciences, have determined to delve into its treasures. I read more than half, in which I was deeply interested; when I was compelled to lay aside the book by the said influx of company, and content myself with the hope that brighter days were yet in store for my disappointed mind.'

Additional Comments:
Letter from Eliza Ellis to Hannah Lucas. John Pringle Nichol (1804-1859) was a Scottish scientist who published extensively on astronomy in the 1830s and 1840s. From the information available, it is not possible to identify the exact Nichol work that Ellis read. George Eliot read Nichol's 'Architecture of the Heavens' in 1841.
