But when the morning came and we rode on, and the beautiful land spread its high places, its secret pastoral solitudes about us, and I sat by a spring and ate my eggs and bread and cheese, and read William of Tyre and watched the poor old thin horse grazing.

Additional Comments:
Dame Freya Madeline Stark (31 January 1893 - 9 May 1993) was a British explorer and travel writer. From the description of the journey and the countryside, this reading experience took place somewhere between Hama and Krak des Chevaliers. It is likely that William of Tyre's History was read in French translation, although Stark was also able to read Latin fluently.
