The question paper

Standard examination papers

OU examination question papers are printed on white paper. The questions are normally printed in one of the following two typefaces shown below.

This image shows sentences shown in Arial 11 and Times New Roman 12 point type.

Some question papers also include diagrams, pictures or colour prints.

Some courses (modules) have computer-marked examination (CME) forms, or answer sheets that you have to use for certain questions.

The specimen examination paper you receive during your study is usually in the same style as your examination paper. Your tutor can help if you have questions about the structure of the examination paper.

Question papers in alternative formats

If a standard question paper will cause you difficulties, either in reading the questions or in recording your answers to them, you can apply to use one or more of the alternatives we offer.

Some students have two or more formats, using each for a particular purpose. But please don’t ask for more than you really need – a standard printed version is always provided as well.

Large print

‘Large print’ means that each A4 page of the question paper is enlarged onto A3 paper (about 140%). We can provide even larger print, or we might be able to provide a paper with reformatted text, but having larger paper or more pages may make the question paper difficult to handle.

It could be worth considering a different approach, such as using a low-vision aid – you can find out more by contacting the staff in the Examinations Team at your regional or national centre.

Different colour

If a white question paper makes it difficult to read the questions please indicate the colour of paper you need in Part 2 of the Facility Request Form 3.

Braille

If you need your examination paper to be in Braille it’s particularly important to let staff at your regional or national centre know as early as possible. It can take several months to produce papers in Braille. Any diagrams or figures may be reproduced in tactile (raised) form, or an alternative question could be provided. You should ask your regional or national centre in good time if you think you may need these facilities.

Audio format

If you’re likely to have difficulty reading or interpreting the written questions it might be appropriate to have a question paper recorded on CD or cassette. However, we can provide this service only if your course (module) already offers recordings of its materials, or if your circumstances are exceptional.

You’ll need to provide your own CD or cassette player for the examination.

Electronic format papers

If you need to use the assistive software which has been approved for examinations you may need a question paper supplied in an electronic format. We can provide question papers in Word or PDF versions, saved onto floppy disk, or CD-ROM.

Please contact your regional or national centre at the earliest opportunity as your request will need special approval.

You can request alternative arrangements for your examinations by completing Facility Request Form 3

For DSA, examination arrangements, and some other financial or equipment schemes you will need to provide written evidence of additional needs. This evidence is usually a diagnostic assessment or medical report but will depend on the individual situation. As this can take a considerable period of time to arrange it is advisable to think about this well in advance.

Download a copy of our booklet Meeting your assessment needs (PDF, 397KB) to help you consider what alternative arrangements wyou will require for your exam.
