Professional biography

I am a second year PhD candidate at the Institute of Educational Technology researching the role of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in the developing world, with a specific interest in the Indian context. My tentative PhD thesis title is "MOOCs for Development? A Study of Indian Learners in Massive Open Online Courses". The study explores the experiences and demographics of Indian MOOC learners, and compares it with existing knowledge of MOOC learners, to identify what, if any, are the differences between MOOC learners from India and the rest of the world. More broadly, the PhD is interested in assessing claims that MOOCs benefit the Global South, and to what extent MOOCs currently play a role in the formal/informal sectors in the Indian context.

My MA thesis from The University of Manchester in 2012-13 was an online ethnographic account of MOOC learners. With limited literature on (x)MOOC learner experiences at this time, an exploratory qualitative study was done on a single MOOC, with interviews with learners as well as community teaching assistants. A number of themes emerged from the study, many of which have since been validated through further study.
