Professional biography

Jane is the Academic Lead for Applaud, the OU's professional development scheme, which is accredited by the Higher Education Academy.  Her background is as an environmental policy analyst with strong interests in education for sustainable development.  She received her PhD from the Open University in 1991, for a study of interest group relationships in the nuclear power sector at the time of electricity privatisation.   Until 2007 she was Principal Lecturer in Environmental Policy at the University of Gloucestershire, initiating and coordinating the university’s link with Kaliro Teachers’ College in Uganda.  Between 2007 and 2009 she worked for the Bulmer Foundation, a Hereford-based sustainable development charity, leading their postgraduate programmes in Sustainable Development Advocacy. In 2009 Jane returned to the OU as Staff Tutor in the south west.  Her growing interest in professional recognition as a tool for inspiring Associate Lecturers to develop their teaching skiils led to a part-time appointment as an HEA accreditor in 2011 and a move to her current role in 2014.

Research interests

Jane's research most recently has been the investigation of threshold concepts in environmental and development education.  She is also interested in the impact of professional recognition on the professional identity and practice of university lecturers.

Teaching interests

Jane was awarded a Teaching Fellowship by the University of Gloucestershire in 2005. In 2012 she achieved Senior Fellowship of the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA). She is also a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and works as an accreditor for the HEA. In 2004 she authored the textbook ‘Environmental Policy’ for Routledge and the second edition was published in 2011. A Korean edition was published in 2012. At Gloucestershire, Jane was responsible for the development and delivery of a broad range of environment and geography courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level, including an annual field class to Uganda. She was actively involved in the university’s CETL, the Centre for Active Learning, and co-edited a handbook of good practice for university teachers seeking to embed sustainability education across the curriculum, ‘Greener by Degrees’. She contributed to the production of TD223 International Development and DST206 Environment.

External collaborations

Since 2011 Jane has worked for the Higher Education Academy as an Associate Assessor. In this role she works closely with colleagues from across the UK sector to review applications to the HEA for the professional recognition of individuals through the HEA Fellowship scheme. She also reviews institutional applications for HEA accreditation of staff development provision in universities and other HE providers.
