Tell us what you need for examinations

Depending upon your particular subject, your studies may include taking an examination. Elements of this may be quite demanding for you so it is advisable to consider, well in advance, what alternative facilities or support you want to ask for.

Please complete the request form for examination arrangements, making the choices appropriate that are appropriate to your own individual needs.

Do make sure you complete the form at least two months before the examination so that we can make appropriate arrangements in time.

If your exam is scheduled within the next two months, then contact your regional or national centre immediately.

Choose how to submit your form.

  1. Complete the request form for examination arrangements online.
  2. Download a copy of the request form for examination arrangements (PDF, 209KB) to print, then complete it and return it to your regional or national centre.
  3. Discuss your requirements with an adviser at your regional or national centre and request a printed copy of the form.

The form gives us some basic information about the kind of arrangements we are likely to need to make for your examinations, and will be a starting point for discussing those arrangements in more detail.

There is an option on the form to tell us about anything that hasn't been covered elsewhere on the form. Even if you have told your tutor or other departments about your circumstances, it is essential that you complete the form fully.

How much information do I need to give?

We will ask you to tell us whether you have particular requirements for examination arrangements, such as particular types of question paper, the help of a scribe, or extra time.

You will also have the chance to note any comments or concerns.

What happens when I submit my request form?

When your form is received you will receive an acknowledgement. Before your examination we will contact you to confirm your requirements with you. The University will do its best to provide services that enable you to study effectively but we can't guarantee that all the services and facilities you ask for will be available or approved.

Forms will normally be processed within 15 working days, but applications from students who are about to start their study will be prioritised over those starting later.

What if I change my mind?

If you change your mind after you have submitted your form, or if your circumstances change, you can contact us by using the online request form, email, telephone or post.

Please remember that there is always a slight delay in your record being updated. If you wish to make changes before your previous requests have been processed and authorised, please do so via email or telephone so that we can avoid working with out-of-date information.

When in doubt, please contact your regional or national centre.

If you are not sure that you are ready to complete the form, contact our Student Registration & Enquiry Service and talk to one of our advisers.

You will need to provide written evidence to support your request.

If you are eligible for a Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA), The Open University will only provide study support that cannot be provided by a DSA. Take the DSA eligibility quiz.
