Professional biography

I am interested in mobile learning and  social and affective uses and aspects of technologies, and also in how informal learning can be supported by technology, especially mobile devices.  See the Research area for further information.  I have recently been working on "The critical researcher: educational technology in practice" a module in our MA on Open and Distance Education which runs from April 2017.  I am also academic lead for the eLearning Community at the Open University which hosts events through which we can share our experiences and discuss the use of educational technology at the OU, mainly in our teaching.

My current research interests include mobile learning and social and affective uses and also in how informal learning can be supported by technology, especially mobile devices amd how this can support language learning.  See the Research area for further information.

I also co-edit the Journal of Interactive Media in Education.  Please visit the site to have a look at what is published or if you are interested in publishing a paper in JIME

Research interests

My current research is in the area of mobile learning, in particular in how informal learning can be supported by technology, especially mobile devices.  I believe we need to understand  more about current practices in using mobile devices, for example, how can and do digital technologies support, motivate and resource communication and learning in informal settings?  I was a co-investigator on the Personal Inquiry project, which investigated how technologies, including mobile devices can support personal inquiries in science, including semiformal inquiries.

I am also interested in how digital technologies, in particular Web 2.0 resources, can support other kinds of informal learning, in particular language learning.  I was a co-investigator on the EU funded MASELTOV project, and this was one of its foci.  My other language related research interest is in how digital technologies can support minority language learning - in particular UK heritage languages.  Learning languages such as Welsh, with a small population of speakers who are geographically dispersed, presents particular challenges in having sufficient opportunities for hearing the language spoken and practicing it.  Web 2.0 resources have a potential role to play here, but we need to understand how they are used by learners in practice.  I recently conducted a small research project in this area.

Teaching interests

I have recently been working on a module called The critical researcher: educational technolog in practice, a module on the  Masters in Open and Distance Education MAODE.  I am also the academic lead and co-organise events for the eLearning Community within the University: an informal community of over 300 staff who are interested in eLearning and in sharing practice.
