The 38th Computers and Learning Research Group Annual Conference
Call for Submissions: Deadline Friday 7th April 2017
We invite submissions for the 38th annual conference of the Computers and Learning Research Group (CALRG), to be held from the 14th-16th June 2017 in The Open University’s Jennie Lee Building, Milton Keynes, UK. CALRG is one of the UK‘s leading research groups in the use of technologies in education. CALRG’s annual conference provides a forum for members and other researchers and practitioners in the field to present their work. We particularly encourage research students to contribute submissions and attend to discuss their projects.
The conference will begin with two days of presentations and interactive sessions across a broad range of relevant topics, including:
- Computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL)
- Accessible online learning
- Mobile learning
- Effective design of learning and learner experiences
- Citizen science and public engagement
- Learning analytics
- Openness in education
- Game-based learning
- Professional learning
- Widening access and participation in education with technology
The third and final day of the conference (16th June) will once again focus on the FutureLearn Academic Network (FLAN). Open to all attendees, the day will include presentations of research around Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on the FutureLearn platform. Information on submissions specifically for the FLAN day will be distributed shortly.
Contributions are invited in the following forms:
1) Full presentations
2) Lightning presentations
This year, we would especially welcome Crossover presentations that explore the links between different research projects. We would encourage doctoral students in particular to collaborate and produce a shared presentation that explores how concepts, methods, or findings connect together.
Full presentations are designed for work that is mature or in the final stages of analysis, and will be allotted approx. 25-30 minutes, including 10 minutes for questions and discussion. Presenters are asked to submit an abstract of 250-300 words.
Lightning presentations are designed for works in progress, projects in their initial stages, and/or early doctoral research with limited results. Presenters in this category will be asked to submit one slide and will have only 3-5 minutes for their presentation. We ask that you submit an abstract of approximately 100 words for a lightning submission. Presenters of lightning talks will also have the option of extending their impact by presenting a poster at the conference.
Posters sessions will enable work in progress to be presented visually. Poster presenters are asked to submit an abstract of approximately 100 words and to be available to discuss their poster during at least one of the days of the conference. Those who are submitting a lightning presentation abstract will not need to submit a second abstract to participate in the poster session.
Presentations and posters from PhD and EdD candidates are a strong component of CALRG. It is recommended that those in the initial stages of their doctoral research contribute a lightning presentation covering their doctoral topic, research questions and expected approach. Those who can share the results of studies or more extensive work are encouraged to submit an abstract for a full presentation. As described above, we would encourage collaborative ‘crossover’ presentations as well. If your abstract submission is considered to be more or less substantial than the length of the presentation slot, we may be able to offer you an alternative form of presentation.
Institute of Educational Technology (IET) and Learning and Teaching Innovation (LTI) portfolio research projects
It is anticipated that all academic research projects based in IET will contribute a submission to the CALRG conference, in order that the conference provides a complete overview of our current work. Submissions from projects across the LTI portfolio, from the wider university, and beyond are also very welcome.
Submitting an abstract
The deadline for abstract submissions is midnight on
Friday 31st March. Friday 7th April 2017. Abstracts for all submission types should be submitted online on the EasyChair website. No submissions will be accepted by email. Accepted abstracts for all types of submission will be included in the online conference programme, with a page for discussion of the work on the Cloudworks platform.
