CFP: Students in Twentieth Century Europe
Submission deadline: Thursday, January 31 2013
Conference date: Thursday, July 18 2013
Conference Venue: School of Social, Historical and Literary Studies, University of Portsmouth
Portsmouth, United Kingdom
Details: Across the twentieth century students have been seen as both the economic and political saviours of Europe, but also a destructive force demanding change. Particularly, but not exclusively, since 1968 students have often been depicted as trouble-makers as they have taken to the streets to protest on a variety of issues. Reports of student protests have rarely represented students and their demands accurately, largely obscured the connections between these protests and wider society and treated ‘students’ as a single unified entity.
This symposium seeks to re-focus the attention of historians and social scientists on students themselves, as well as the role and importance of students, in twentieth century Europe contributing to a more detailed and nuanced history of students. Papers might address, but are not limited to, the following topics:
- The development of student identity across Europe
- The history of non-active or ‘apathetic’ students
- Student activism before ‘68
- Students and charity/voluntary work
- Gender and the student experience
- Students and issues of ‘race’ and ethnicity
- Student unions and student involvement in international organisations
