Social media can supercharge your professional presence. Your online presence is the way that you present yourself and one of the ways you’ll be vetted in the recruitment process. Here are some tips to maximise your social media superpowers and secure your future job.

1. Build your social media skills

There are plenty of events and resources that can help you level up your social media skills. Keep an eye out for our regular LinkedIn workshops for advice on how to build your online portfolio and take a look at our page on networking with LinkedIn for information, support and advice.

2. Craft your brand

Need some help with creating your online brand? Take a look at pages on creating a professional profile or portfolio. It’s important to invest time in marketing yourself – your personal branding can help showcase your skills and attributes which can help you find incredible opportunities.

3. Invest interest in your industry

Most organisations have their own social media platforms, which is a great way of keeping up to date with employers and industries that you’re interested in. Find them on LinkedIn and read their blog if they have one. Learn how to use Labour Market Information to search smarter, expand your options and find opportunities in your local area.

4. Network to uncover hidden gems

There are more vacancies in the hidden jobs market than there are advertised vacancies. That’s why it’s important, once you’ve established your professional social media profiles, to then take the initiative and start networking and connect with professionals who may give you insights you won’t find with a simple search engine.

5. Review your digital footprint

Social media can be a great asset, but it can also work against you. Employer’s will often screen potential candidates – and if they find anything that goes against their social media policies, they may not recruit you. It’s important to review your digital footprint and check your personal social media is private as well as grow and publicise your professional social media.
