Military Music in Britain

The Diary of a Victorian Bandsman

British publishers of military music 1770-1880

British music publishers publishing military repertoire 1770-1880
Helen Barlow

This is not a comprehensive list of British military music publishers in the late eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries, but simply a list of those publishers identified in the course of research into military repertoire in the period. The identification of publishers is important because it helps identify repertoire and often the recipients of repertoire.

The data are arranged in two ways:

  • in Table 1, they are arranged to show the total number of publishers identified
  • in Table 2, the same data are rearranged to show in which towns these publisherswere located, and how many publishers have been identified in each town

The main source for the data is the British Library catalogue of printed music.
