Description
There are no linguistic laws for the English language and there is no equivalent here of the French Academy, which issues pronouncements on the correct use of French. But we all have a concept of w...hat is or is not standard and correct English. The programme attempts to describe the process by which these ideas came about and how they are maintained. It begins with contributions from a publishers editor and from the Head of the BBC's Pronunciation Unit. This is followed by a discussion, chaired by the E263 Course Team Chairman, between Dr. Michael Stubbs of Nottingham University, and Mr. Stanley Ellis, of Leeds University, who seek to illuminate both the historical background and the present reality of the "standardisation" process.
