Description
In this programme Gerrylynn Roberts traces the development of domestic electricity in Britain and the subsequent changes this brought about for women in the home. Using rare archive film from the E...lectricity Development Association and the Electrical Association for Women, she notes how women specifically were targeted for publicity in the development of domestic electricity and the creation of the National Grid, how this brought about the creation of the Electrical Association for Women by Dame Caroline Haslett with the aims of educating women on how to take best advantage of electricity in alleviating them from servile chores, and to demand standards of design and practicality from architects and appliance manufacturers.
