Description
Born in Peru, Liliana Torero-Fernandez arrived in the UK in 2000 and started an Open University degree in 2002, before graduating with a BA (Hons) in Language Studies in 2008. Liliana recalls that ...her graduation ceremony was very emotional, and she thanks her OU studies for helping her to regain her confidence in studying at higher education level, as well as her confidence in the English language (which is not her mother tongue). Following her graduation, Liliana got into the routine of time management so decided to embark upon a two-year training course, which led to her gaining a Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DTLLS) with City & Guilds via Milton Keynes College. This meant that in addition to working full time, Liliana also taught Spanish adult education courses at Milton Keynes Council for a couple of evenings each week. Liliana did this for a number of years and used OpenLearn resources where appropriate to encourage adult learners to use free resources that could potentially lead to formal language studies with the OU. After around a nine-year study break, Liliana decided to study towards a Masters qualification in Applied Linguistics having enjoyed some Level 2 and 3 modules on the subject during her undergraduate degree. However, Liliana mainly chose applied linguistics as she felt it presented a challenge, as she hadn’t previously experienced English studies – e.g. English politics, society, language, culture etc. – so she felt that by studying this subject there would always be something new to learn.
