Agnes Kukulska-Hulme, Saraswati Dawadi and Fereshte Goshtasbpour – Impact of COVID-19 on Equitable Access to Higher Education in Low-Resource Contexts

The Covid-19 pandemic forced higher education institutions around the world to shut down and students to receive online education from home. This presentation reports on the findings of a study that explored undergraduate students’ and teachers’ experiences of online education during the pandemic in the context of higher education in Kenya and Nepal.  Adopting the Building Equitable Learning Environments (BELE) framework and employing a qualitative research design, the study used semi-structured interviews to explore the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on equitable access to education. The results show that students and teachers, particularly from rural settings, faced several challenges and experienced some new opportunities that will be discussed in this presentation.
