Description
Samuel Carter Hall was an Irish journalist who was editor of 'The Art Journal' from 1849 to 1880. It was regarded as the most important magazine on art published during the nineteenth century. Hall was unimpressed with the Pre-Raphaelites and published several attacks on the movement. Hall married Irish novelist Anna Maria Fielding (better known by her married name). Hall's sanctimonious character was much satirised by writers including Charles Dickens.
