Serge Plata, Massimiliano Zattera & Jovanna Ioanou: Digital Assistants at the OU – AI Supported Intent Extraction

Abstract: Investment in edTech (Digital Education) has grown dramatically in past years and it is expected to maintain this trend for the years to come. Part of these investments are directed at creating “Educational Bots” that help prospects and students during the enrolment, learning and daily life at university; bots are becoming ubiquitous and have proven they can deliver value such as increased conversion rate for prospects and improved students’ learning outcomes. As part of “Test & Learn” programme, the OU has already started its journey in conversational AI with several pilots; this has already been presented at CALRG in a couple of occasions. In this presentation we look deeper into early implementation stages of a “Digital Assistant” for students, highlighting some AI-assisted tools we use to define target intents for early automation.
