It is great to see that other new towns have pieces of public art as well as Milton Keynes. The role of art in urban planning is interesting, though some may see it at as an expensive luxury in a time of austerity I would argue that it has a vital part to play in the creation of identity and community (as have many before me). The inclusion of sculpture such as this creates visual interest in the area but more importantly invites interaction, I imagine that many children ride these hippos and play around them. In Milton Keynes, there are many other pieces of public art aside from the concrete cows, some are a fusion of practicality and art, such as a dinosaur themed play area, others are pure sculpture or 2D artworks. The common thread is that the art creates a focal point for the community and distinguishes one area from another as well as lifting the spirits of those who happen across it in the course of their travels.
