Professional biography

Martin is a Senior Lecturer in Economics and Personal Finance in Social Sciences at the Open University. He has edited and authored books in undergraduate Economics and Personal Finance textbooks and led on the development of digital learning in personal finance.

His current research interests are on developing financial capability and new approaches to financial education especially among young adults, and is currently co-lead on an Open Society Challenges funded project; Financial 5 A Day.  This includes producing a new podcast series interviewing personal finance experts and developing an innovative App aimed at young adults. He brings a wealth of experience as an educator to de-mystify the world of personal finance and has also trained as a coach.

He recently was the academic lead on the highly acclaimed BBC Series "What went wrong; Britains Housing Crisis" BBC iPlayer - Britain’s Housing Crisis: What Went Wrong?  

His main research interests are on developing financial capability especially among young adults and is currently co-lead on an Open Society Challenges funded project; Financial 5 A Day.

He also has interest in issues of equity and inequality in Healthcare.

Research interests

A particular interest in developing new ways of improving financial capability and money confidence among young adults and the population more generally.

Teaching interests

Martin was Co-Chair of the innovative undergraduate Personal Finance module and was co-editor of the core textbook Personal Finance. He also authored two chapters in the book. He was also the academic lead for the interactive VLE material for the same module.

He was a co-editor of the second level undergraduate textbook Running the Economy and authored a chapter as well as developing digital learning material for the same module

Martin authored a chapter in the second level undergraduate textbook and led on the on the digital learning material on statistics for the same module.
