Cyber security is a growing concern – there’s a significant skills gap and global demand for cybersecurity professionals. Our MSc, provisionally certified by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), a part of GCHQ, develops the skills you need to pursue a career in the industry. The course covers various topics, including digital forensics and information, network and systems security. It also incorporates transferable skills applicable to professional development and finishes with a substantial independent project.

To gain this qualification, you need 180 credits. You'll study four compulsory 30-credit modules, choose 30 credits from a range of option modules, and complete your degree with a 30-credit project module.

By studying the MSc in Cyber Security, you’ll:

You’ll study independently through supported online learning, guided activities and specialist digital resources.

You’ll be awarded a Master of Science in Cyber Security upon successful completion. You’ll be entitled to use the letters MSc Cyber (Open) after your name.

Your masters degree may be awarded with a distinction or a merit. The qualification regulations explain the criteria you’ll need to meet to earn one of these classifications.

You’ll also have the opportunity to attend a degree ceremony.

Most students study the MSc in Cyber Security part-time, completing 60 credits per year over a three-year period. Typically, this translates to 16–20 hours of study per week.

You can also complete this qualification in two years by studying the four compulsory modules concurrently: two from November to April and two from May to October. If you wish to stay at this faster rate, you’ll need to devote 32–40 hours each week to your studies for the first year.

The recommended hours include time to work through that week’s online study planner, complete recommended reading, and attend tutorials.

You must complete the MSc in Cyber Security within six years.

If you’ve studied at university level before, you may be able to transfer the academic credit you've been awarded towards an OU qualification. This could save you time and money by reducing the modules you need to study.

You should apply to transfer credit before registering, at least four weeks before the registration closing date. We will need to know what you studied, where, and when, and you will need to provide evidence of your previous study.
