Professional biography

Paulette Johnson is currently the Academic Lead for Access Participation and Success in the faculty of Wellbeing, Education and Language Studies. Paulette has undertaken several leadership roles at The OU, including Academic Lead for social work admissions (England), Academic Lead for the student support (social work) and has been the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Lead in the school of Health, Wellbeing and Social Care. As a social work practitioner Paulette worked with adults in criminal justice services and has an extensive career in management and senior management roles within this area of work as well as education.  Paulette moved into post compulsory education in 2013 after supporting students within a workplace setting throughout her career.

Research interests

Paulette was involved in a research project 'Social Work For Everyone' funded by the Office for Students which aims to raise awareness of the benefits of the Social Worker Degree Apprenticeship.  The project team have developed resources to support employers and potential applicants from academic institutions in being able to inform, attract and support potential applicants from underrepresented groups. 

Paulette is currently a Post Graduate Research (PGR) student with The Open University undertaking doctoral research exploring tutor perceptions of anti-racist pedagogy, developing an understanding within a distance learning environment.

Paulette's research interests are widening participation, digital inclusion/exclusion, understanding the experience of underrepresented groups in education, student co-production and equity, diversity and inclusion. 

Teaching interests

Paulette has a work and teaching background in drug and alcohol addiction and recovery, and was previously Programme Manager for the BA (Hons) Addiction Studies at the University of Leeds. Paulette continues to pursue her interest in supporting vulnerable service users in her capacity as Chair of the Management Committee, Bradford Cyrenians. This is a role that she is committed to and has undertaken for the last 11 years.
