Baron Thyssen MA Scholarships in Classical Studies

This information is also available in PDF format.

We are delighted to be able to offer two fully-funded MA scholarships made possible through the generosity of Baron Lorne Thyssen-Bornemisza. The scholarships will provide for the full fees of two students taking the two-year part-time MA degree in Classical Studies at the Open University, subject to satisfactory academic progress in the foundation module (A863).

The scholarships are open to graduates of any university holding a high 2:1 Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent, ideally, but not necessarily, in Classics, Classical Studies, Ancient History or a related subject. The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic merit, financial hardship and a demonstrable need for the qualification such as to facilitate professional development, e.g. a change in career, specialization for teachers, preparation for study at MPhil/PhD level, etc. Full details of the MA programme and general entry requirements may be found online.

As it is taught entirely online, the qualification is available to students living in any part of the world.

Please complete the application form which includes a section for a personal statement. This section should be used to explain your personal circumstances and why you want to study for an MA in Classical Studies at the Open University. It should make clear the basis of your financial need for support to study for an MA. You should also send:

  • a separate curriculum vitae (CV) of no more than two pages;
  • a copy of your latest degree certificate;
  • a transcript of your degree that makes clear the level of your academic achievement;
  • the name of an academic referee who would be prepared to support your application if you are shortlisted; this should be someone who has taught you or worked with you.

The scholarships will not be awarded to students receiving full funding from the AHRC or other bodies. It is not necessary to register for the MA degree before making this application. The awards will be made at the discretion of the Department of Classical Studies and there can be no appeals against its decision.

The Open University promotes diversity in education and we welcome applications from all sections of the community. If it would help to have the application in an alternative format please contact
Arts-Classics-Gen-Enquiries@open.ac.uk. The deadline for applications is 4 p.m. on 11 May 2015 and we intend to inform all applicants of the outcome in early June.
