Professional biography

I am a Lecturer in the Institute of Educational Technology (IET) at The Open University. My research interests lie in Human Computer Interaction and Educational Technology where I am particularly keen to investigate learning within the context of games and playful technologies. Previously, I have explored how people learn to use technology in the workplace, how digital games and tools support informal learning and the use of digital games in formal education.

Prior to joining the IET, I was a Research Associate at the UCL Interaction Centre (UCLIC) where I worked on the EPSRC funded CHI+MED project. My work highlighted concerns around the use of e-learning to deliver infusion device training; the use of “smart pump” technology that aims to improve safety and how internal and external resources influence user action. I also organized a game design competition where students developed a game for the purposes of encouraging the general public to reflect on human error and the role of blame culture within healthcare. The winning game, Nurse’s Dilemma, provided a good example of how an uncomfortable gameplay experience can challenge previously taken for granted assumptions about responsibility and blame. Whilst at UCLIC, I also supervised student projects on breakdowns and player strategies in games and contributed to the Citizen Cyberlab project through helping to investigate learning and motivation within the context of citizen science.

My PhD research at IET led to the development of the Gaming Involvement and Informal Learning model, which describes how and what players learn through their engagement with gaming, highlighting the influence of player identity; and to a theory of how game-play breakdowns and breakthroughs occur in relation to player action, understanding and involvement. Prior to that, I was a Research Officer at the University of Bath where I was involved in the evaluation of Racing Academy, a game designed to support learning of engineering and physics, within further and higher education contexts. This work provided guidelines for use of the game and added to a growing evidence base on the effectiveness of educational games.
