Dr Kambiz Saber-Sheikh

Profile summary

Professional biography

Kambiz graduated as a mechanical engineer from the University of Sussex in 1993 with a degree project investigating the vibrational characteristics and stress stiffening effects of radial turbine blades using the finite element method.

He was awarded his PhD in Biomedical Materials in 1998 at the Interdisciplinary Research Centre (IRC) in Biomedical Materials, QMUL, the UK centre of excellence in biomaterials at that time. His PhD research, funded by EPSRC and industrially sponsored, was concerned with characterisation of 'soft' biomedical polymers, in particularly their viscoelastic behaviour.

He has since worked in a range of roles and industries, and has varied experience of research, design, consultancy and teaching. In 1998 he was employed at the University of Southampton working on finite element modelling of the non-linear contact behaviour of total knee replacement prosthetics.

From 1999 to 2001, working in a team based at UCL, he was responsible for the mechanical engineering analysis and design optimisation (FEA) of an astronomical instrument for the state of the art Gemini South telescope now commissioned at Cerro Pachon, Chile.

From 2001 to 2003 he worked in an engineering consultancy (Mott MacDonald), where he gained status as a chartered engineer (CEng), having analysis, design and development responsibilities on a number of national and international infrastructure projects. From 2003-2005 he qualified (PGCE) and worked as a school teacher.

Between 2006 and 2017 he was employed at the University of Brighton. His core role was coordinating a Biomechanics Laboratory. He collaborated on several mulitdisciplinary research projects (for example the Significant Walks project) and co-supervised several PhDs to completion.

He currently works for the Open University as a Staff tutor and Associate lecturer. He has taught on several engineering modules including T193, T207, T271, T272, T357 and T804.

His hobbies include playing tennis, running, gardening and carpentary.

Research interests

Varied research interests, including interdisciplinary research (for example collaborations in science, art and health), application of finite element analysis, biomechanics, biomaterials, viscoelasticity of polymers - particularly dynamic mechanical analysis.
