Research interests

Retirement has enabled a fuller commitment to research than was possible before. I have had research collaboration trips to Warsaw (2008) and Paris (2009). My research continues to focus on phenomenological aspects of the theory of the interaction between atomic nuclei. In particular, I have been exploiting a tool, developed at the OU since about 1980, for solving the S(L) to V(r) inverse scattering problem.

I have published 128 papers in refereed journals (including refereed scholarpedia article), and many other items in conference proceedings, etc.

There are three major refereed review articles:

1. R. S. Mackintosh, The shape of nuclei, Reports on Progress in Physics, Vol 40 (1977) pp 731 - 789

2. V I.Kukulin and R. S. Mackintosh , The application of inversion to nuclear scattering, J Phys G Vol 30 (2004) pp R1 - R55

3. R.S. Mackintosh, The angular momentum dependence of nuclear optical potentials, European Physical Joyrnal A, Vol 55 (2019) 147 (28 pages).

Specific projects related to those listed above are reflected in the papers published since my retirement:

1. R. S. Mackintosh and N. Keeley, Strong pickup coupling effects in proton scattering; the case of Be-10,  Physical Review, C 76 (2007) 024601

2. N Keeley and R.S. Mackintosh, Pickup coupling effects in deuteron scattering; the case of d + Ca-40, Physical Review, C 77 (2008) 054603

3. R.S. Mackintosh and N. Keeley,  He-6 breakup dynamical polarization potential re-examined, Physical Review, C 79 (2009) 015611

Several others, and most recently

N. Keeley and R.S. Mackintosh, Reaction channel coupling effects ... Physical Review C 97, 014605 (2018)

N. Keeley and R.S. Mackintosh, Pickup coupling contribution ... Physical Review C 99, 034614 (2019).

Teaching interests

I have been deeply involved in working on courses in E&M, Relativity and Cosmology, and especially Quantum Mechanics.

I have been responsible for developing residential schools in Electromagnetism and in Quantum Mechanics.

Since retiring, I have spent an intensive 6 months on the QM course, but since then my major teaching work has been to give lectures to postgrad students on nuclear astrophysics etc.

External collaborations

My main collaboration at present is with Professor N. Keeley in Warsaw.
