Department of Sociology

The Department of Sociology is widely known for its interdisciplinary, socio-cultural approach to both teaching and research. Its activities in both areas share a commitment to developing practical approaches to studying the relationships between culture, economy, individuals, technologies and the material world.

This orientation can be seen in department members' contributions to research centres, like Centre for Research on Socio-Cultural Change (CRESC ) and Centre for Citizenship, Identities, Governance (CCIG).

Staff in the department are the editors of leading journals including Sociology, the Journal of Cultural Economy and Psychoanalysis, Culture and Society. Sociology was ranked as having 55% of research outputs at world class (4*) or internationally excellent (3*) in the 2008 RAE. Our research outputs can be viewed at Open Research Online.
