Professional biography

I read History at the University of Sheffield and continued my studies at postgraduate level with a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education and a doctorate entitled 'The personal and professional relationships between Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford and his closest advisors' which I completed in 2004. I have taught on undergraduate modules at the Universities of Sheffield and Nottingham, and at Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln where I developed a Public History module. I joined the OU as an Associate Lecturer in 2002 and have taught on a wide range of level 1 interdisciplinary modules as well as History modules at level 2 and 3. I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. 

Alongside my work as an Associate Lecturer, I am working as a central academic in the role of Lecturer of History (until December 2023).

 

 

Research interests

My research centres on the relationships between Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford and his secretariat and advisors during the 1620s and 1630s. I am currently working on journal articles exploring the way in which Wentworth, whilst Lord Deputy of Ireland, used Sir George Radcliffe and Sir Christopher Wandesford to manage and maintain his rule in Ireland.
