Development Of Next-Generation X-ray Instrumentation For Space And Planetary Science (Phase 2)

This is phase 2 of the initial 4 month's funding to determine the instrument requirements and preliminary system design for the AXIS instrument camera, which will be flown on the ISRO DISHA mission. In this phase, the work performed will aim to characterise and calibrate an EM camera developed by XCAM and with detectors from Teledyne e2v. An EM camera system will also be delivered to ISRO along with training on its operation. The UK Science team will also be developed by project partners at UCL/MSSL. The reporting to UKSA, export control documentation/compliance, liaising with XCAM, Teledyne e2v and international partners means there is requirement from the agency for appropriate project management support to be included in the bid. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/international-bilateral-fund This is primarily a paper study to determine the instrument requirements and preliminary system design for the AXIS instrument which will be flown on the ISRO DISHA mission. The work performed will aim to de-risk a new CMOS image sensor drive system which will be breadboarded by XCAM alongside a market survey for this system (costed at £30,000) to determine future return on investment for such a system. In addition the UKSA require delivery of a full proposal for Phase 2 of their International Bilateral programme. Despite the short term of the funding, the reporting to UKSA (and export control documentation/compliance, liaising with XCAM, Teledyne e2v and international partners in building the next phase proposal), are no less onerous than other UKSA programmes and there is therefore an expectation from the agency for appropriate project management support to be included in the bid. JANUS - Signal dependent baseline suppression investigation

The OU was a member of the full “core team” within JANUS responsible for the CIS115 detector development and test programme, but the OU JANUS grant expired on 31 March 2021. Analysis of the Flight Model JANUS instrument calibration data has recently identified a problem with a variable detector baseline. OU propose to characterise the effect for the CIS115 to support efforts to calibrate this out on PFM JANUS. OU Project outcomes will be characterisation of effect and suggested ground correction method(s). This would allow the JANUS PI and JANUS science team to implement any corrections needed for the mission operations.
