Title – enter the initial word(s) of the title, omitting any initial 'a' or 'the'. For journal articles, this searches on the title of the article, not the journal.
Author - enter 'Surname, Forename' or 'Surname' only
Publication date – this is the date of the edition that is catalogued, rather than the date of first publication. You can search for all books published before or after [OR – before, after, or on] a certain year.
Period – this is the period covered by the item, divided by the menu into certain broad categories. Works that two or more of these categories are listed under all of those which are applicable. Works that do not refer to a specific period are listed as 'general'.
Type – 'Primary sources 'are those that are an object of study in their own right such as Colquohoun's 'Police of the Metropolis'. 'Secondary sources' covers academic works written by later historians.
Description – This allows you to select the type of item that you wish to search for. The vast majority of records in the database are either books or articles. Some sub-categories – for example bibliographies and biographies – are subsumed within 'books'.
