Footage description: Professor Ted Honderich, Grote Professor of Philosophy at University College, London, is interviewed by Janet Radcliffe Richards of the Open University. The purpose of the programme is to present a view of the topic of free will which is rather different from the one presented in the units. Professor Honderich gives two definitions of freedom that have been used by philosophers. The first, freedom as voluntariness, is what is described in the Unit as the compatibilist account. The second, freedom as origination, is a stronger conception. The programme then discusses the relevance of determinism to these two different types of freedom. In the units it is argued that we cannot have the 'origination' kind of freewill because it is incoherent; Professor Honderich argues that we cannot have it because of the truth of determinism. For different reasons, therefore, Janet Radcliffe Richards and Professor Honderich agree that it is not possible to have free will in the traditional sense and they go on to consider some of the effects of this.
