Description
Mary Martha Sherwood (née Butt) was an English author of children's books. Her early works contained strong evangelical themes, while her later books contained themes of Victorian family and domesticity. She spent ten years in India with her army captain husband and on their return to England she opened a boarding school. Her books were extremely popular and among her best known were 'The History of Little Henry and his Bearer' and 'The History of the Fairchild Family'. During the late nineteenth century her books gradually lost their popularity.
