Description
Arthur Helps was an English writer and civil servant. He began his career as private secretary to politicians Lord Monteagle and then Lord Morpeth. He pursued a career in writing for twenty years before being appointed Clerk of the Privy Council in 1860. Popular with Queen Victoria, she asked him to edit a volume of Prince Albert's speeches after the Consort's death in 1861. Helps was an early advocate of animal rights and the prevention of cruelty to animals.
