Description
Washington Irving was an American writer, biographer, historian and diplomat. He is most well-known for his stories 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' and 'Rip Van Winkle'. He also published several biographies and histories. His writing influenced Christmas festivities in the US in the same way that Charles Dickens' stories did in the UK and he is regarded as one of the most important American authors of the nineteenth century, particularly of the short story. Irving was appointed American Minister to Spain in 1842.
