Description
This programme looks at the various aspects of the Indian family planning campaign. In the early part of the programme Hedy Brown, Lecturer in Social Psychology, gives a brief account of the campai...gn and introduces film which shows various aspects of it in action. This campaign is of particular interest as a massive and sustained attempt to change the behaviour of millions of people in a particular direction, by creating an awareness of the implications of over-population, and interest in how these problems can be overcome and the motivation for individual people to take the necessary action. We see something of how posters, radio, mobile exhibitions, puppet theatres and film shows have been used in the campaign and in the process see something of how the Indian Government has approached the problem of changing the behaviour and gaining acceptance of innovations among millions of people in a country with deeply established social traditions. The later part of the programme consists of a discussion between Professor Michael Drake, of the Open University and David Glass, Professor of Sociology at the London School of Economics and a distinguished demographer, on the problems and implications of the Indian campaign and of birth control campaigns in various other countries. This is the last of a group of five at the end of the course, which are all concerned with various aspects of the population problem in India.

Glass gives some statistical information. Glass explains why the Chinese programme has proved more successful and in what other countries birth control is more effective. Glass explains why the loop failed, and how things might be improved. Drake sums up the block on population as a whole, again pointing out the links between the various social science disciplines.
