Using giant plastic tubes, the Freshwater Biological Association created model lakes within a natural lake. Blelham tarn, and they began an investigation into the primary production of freshwater a...lgae that has been running for fourteen years. It was an ambitious field experiment that provided a unique opportunity to study algae under natural conditions. The work yielded a wealth of information on why and numbers and species of algae undergo seasonal fluctuation, so much so that they can predict and, if necessary, postpone the development of algal blooms. Dr John Lund, who originated and developed the project, explains some of their early experiments and dr. Colin reynolds brings us up to date with their latest discoveries.
