6.1 Background

Adapted from the TELSTAR Project plan:

The Open University (OU) is the largest university in the UK, teaching around 178,000 people in 2006/07. The effective delivery of online activities at distance and at scale requires an institution wide and systematic solution.

A key element of the OU e-Learning Strategy is the university-wide implementation of a suite of tools that form a technology enhanced learning (TEL) environment to be rolled out for use by all students, based on the Moodle open source platform. The TEL environment is known to students as their “course website”.

In terms of access to Library services, all students and staff may access a large number of online resources from a variety of collections made available through the library website and digital library service and/or via a reference to a library subscribed resource embedded in course materials and links in course websites.
