Employability at NTU

Everyone at NTU has responsibility for transforming graduate outcomes, our current institutional approach ensures that all students on all courses are provided with opportunities to reflect on their future career opportunities, gaining a better understanding of the labour market and the potential career path they may wish to pursue.  All NTU students have the opportunity to gain meaningful experience through direct engagement with employers and the world of work, through activities such as placements, live projects, internships, or community engaged learning.  Finally, all NTU students are required to reflect on the totality of their learning, both in the curriculum and beyond, considering how this lifewide learning cumulatively supports them in realising those first steps on their career journey.

In addition to these excellent foundations for employability established at NTU, we continue to push boundaries as we seek to explore the possibilities of University Reimagined, and what a University of the future looks like.  As part of this work the Employability team have developed a new, research informed, integrated and holistic approach to learning underpinned by the Employability Redefined Taxonomy.  This taxonomy acts as scaffolding at a course level, highlighting a combination of areas of learning that are all equally important to support a student’s future success.  Working in partnership with each School, the Employability Team are currently piloting this innovative and sector-leading approach with a view to rolling this out further in the future.

Fundamentally, NTU believes that employability is more than just about developing the skills for the here and now; it’s about learning about who you are – your strengths, your interests, your areas for growth – and building your personal qualities and capabilities for the future, for your life both in terms of work and beyond, preparing you to flourish in a future complex world.
