Visiting fellows scheme launched

We are delighted to announce the launch of our visiting fellows scheme with the first two visiting fellows hosted by ObserVAW in 2022.

We are delighted to be welcoming Professor Minjeong Kim from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies as an ObserVAW Visiting Fellow from 5-9 September 2022.

We are also delighted to be welcoming Dr Joo-Young Lee from Seoul National University’s Human Rights Centre as an ObserVAW Visiting Fellow from 26-30 September 2022.

Professor Minjeong Kim

Dr Minjeong Kim is Professor of Media and Communication at the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies(HUFS) at Seoul, South Korea. She completed her M.A. and Ph.D. from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC, U.S.A. Before joining the HUFS faculty in fall 2013, Minjeong was an associate professor at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO, U.S.A and an assistant professor at Hawaii Pacific University in Honolulu, HI, U.S.A.

Minjeong’s areas of expertise include media law and policy, and digital media. Her research has been published in scholarly journals including Communication Law and Policy, Journal of Copyright Society of USA, Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, Telecommunications Policy, and International Journal of Communication. She also has published numerous research articles in Korean scholarly journals such as Journal of Media Law, Ethics and Policy and Media, Gender & Culture. To review and comment upon issues related to hate speech, journalism, and media law beyond the academic community, she has contributed trade journals and newspaper columns; has appeared on broadcast, and has given public lectures. 

Her utmost research interest in recent years evolves around hate speech online. In 2014 she published one of the earliest scholarly articles reviewing the issue of hate speech online in Korea and in the article she explored the concept of hate speech for a regulatory frame. Afterwards She published manuscripts examining Korean administrative regulation on hate speech online, international laws regulating hate speech online, social media platforms’ self-regulation on hate speech online, and public’s perception on sexist hate speech. In addition, she has written scholarly articles and has given academic conference presentations on the issue of free speech and democracy including how to regulate fake news/disinformation online and how to curb online abuse and harassment targeting journalists.

Dr Joo-Young Lee

Joo-Young Lee is Associate Research Professor at the Seoul National University Human Rights Center. She currently serves as President of Korean Association of Human Rights Studies (2021-2022). Her research interests include international human rights law in general, socioeconomic rights, and issues relating to equality. She received her Ph.D. in international human rights law at the University of Essex, M.A. in Human Rights at the University of Sussex in the UK, and BA in Social Policy at Seoul National University in South Korea.

She is the author of A Human Rights Framework for Intellectual Property, Innovation and Access to Medicines (2015), “Neoliberal Developmentalism in South Korea and the Unfulfilled Promise of Economic and Social Rights” in Economic and Social Rights in a Neoliberal World (Cambridge University Press, 2017), and “Distributive Justice and Economic and Social Rights” in Economic Inequality and Human Rights (Cambridge University Press, September 2021). She also published ‘Study on Hate Speech from an International Human Rights Law Perspective with Focus on Incitement to Hatred’ Korean Journal of International Law (2015), ‘The Development of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and Its National Implications’, Korean Journal of International Law (2016), ‘Victim’s Rights and Victim-centered Approach in International Human Rights Law’ (co-authored with Buhm-Suk Baek), The Korean Journal of International Law (2018), ‘Social Rights of Non-citizens: A Critical Analysis of the Korean Constitutional Court Decisions’, Journal of Human Rights Studies (2018), ‘Justiciability of Social Rights: Beyond the Dichotomy Between Liberal Rights and Social Rights’, Labor Law Review (2019), ‘A Relational Approach to Human Rights’, Korean Journal of Law & Society (2020), among others.
