Dr Jenny Lynden

Profile summary

Professional biography

I am a Chartered Psychologist, Registered Test User (Occupational, Ability and Personality) and Member of the Division of Health Psychology and Division of Coaching Psychology with the BPS.  I specialise in applied psychology in the fields of health, coaching and higher education. 

As a Coaching Psychologist I use an integrative model of coaching, including solution-focused, positive psychology and cognitive-behavioural approaches. I have a specialism in supporting coachee health and well-being.  I have trained at the Centre for Coaching and the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust in London.  I have supported coachees in managing perfectionism, procrastination, stress management, as well as supporting the development of assertive skills. 

I developed an innovative online programme of webinars for the BPS Division of Occupational Psychology in 2017, which drew on an evidence-base to support a discussion about effective interventions to promote wellbeing at work.  I have co-designed and -facilitated online Vetkind seminars in 2018-2021, sponsored by Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Mind Matters, to engage veterinary students in promoting their health and wellbeing. I am Co-Director of the FASS Coaching Cultures Project and Principal Investigator for a research evaluation project involving a grounded theory analysis of participants' experiences of the coaching programme.  I am also a Committee Member of the Division of Coaching Psychology with the BPS, and in that role support the development of online learning resources.

I have extensive experience of working in higher education in management, teaching and academic consultancy roles. I have worked at the Open University and the University of Surrey teaching on undergraduate and postgraduate psychology programmes, specialising in social psychology and qualitative research methods.  As a Senior Lecturer and Staff Tutor in Psychology, I currently manage the delivery of the OU Psychology Programme in the North West of England, and am Co-Chair of DD803, the MSc in Psychology dissertation module.  I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and have longstanding experience of module production, including working with the DE100 and DE300 module teams to create interactive online learning resources which support students to develop academic and research skills on the BPS Core Modules.  I have developed practitioner research into higher education, particularly focusing on approaches to online learning, as well as supporting widening participation in higher education.

Research interests

My main research interest involves applying conversation/discourse analyse to understand what makes ‘helping conversations’ effective.   This involves a microlevel analysis of the features of communication (linguistic and paralinguistic) which lead to collaboration and partnership working, particularly focusing on question and answer design, repair, affiliation, alignment and epistemic stance.  I have published research which has involved a microlevel analysis of conversations in coaching contexts (human and veterinary), as well as online (chatbot-user interactions) which involved collaboration with Dr Doris Dippold (University of Surrey) and AMO (a company which specialises in the development of AI chatbots).   

For my PhD, I conducted research which used multimethods to explore the role of equine paraprofessionals in supporting horse owners to prevent and manage endocrinopathic laminitis in their horses.  I used a grounded theory approach to identify how equine paraprofessional roles are co-constructed through everyday social practices, how some of these roles led to role ambiguity and role conflict, and explored how similar and different their roles were to comparable practitioner roles in other healthcare contexts.  I presented my research at veterinary and animal welfare conferences internationally, and published it in Equine Veterinary Journal and Journal of Equine Veterinary Science.
