Professional biography

Sally Ogut is a Staff Tutor and Lecturer in health, wellbeing and social care in the Faculty of Wellbeing, Education and Language Studies. She joined The Open University in Wales in 2014 after a career in social work spanning almost 20 years. Sally specialised in working with people who were street homeless and people with haemophilia and HIV/Hepatitis.  She worked as a social worker in sexual health supporting asylum seekers with HIV. Sally is part of the team in Wales responsible for delivery of the Social Work programme. Her scholarship activities centre around her keen interest in exploring what enables students to succeed in distance learning.

Sally is a Senior Fellow of the HEA and acts as mentor for new candidates.

Research interests

Sally is a member of the Reproduction and Sexual Health Research Group at the Open University.

Scholarship projects include:

  • Babies and Books: experiences of pregancy and early motherhood while learning at a distance
  • An evaluation of the use of Open Studio adapted for a first level foundation module to encourage multi-modal learning and peer interaction
  • Graduate perspectives of achieving a degree in health and social care
  • Experiencing online teaching: a mixed methods study exploring student experience of online tuition

Teaching interests

As a staff tutor Sally is responsible for the management and quality assurance of health and social care modules including Applied Social Work Practice and Leading, Managing, Caring. She is responsible for appointing and developing associate lecturers and for quality assurance of academic and practice learning. Sally has a role in promoting the four nations strategy of the University to raise awareness of the policy and legislative context in Wales with regard to higher education and social work. Sally is part of a team managing the delivery of the social work programme in Wales and has particular responsibility for the level 2 practice module.

Sally was co-chair for K101, An Introduction to Health and Social Care, and critical reader for the replacement module, K102 Introducing Health and Social Care. She is currently developing the tuition strategy for K310, a new module in production, Public health: health promotion and health security.

Sally is an academic conduct officer for the Faculty of Health, Wellbeing and Social Care. She is also Student Support Team sub-lead for social work and co-chair of the Social Work Staff Tutor group. Sally is external examiner for post-qualifying programmes in social work at Cardiff Metropolitan University.
