Professional biography

I am a Lecturer in Sustainable Development at the School of Social Sciences & Global Studies. Before joining the OU, I worked as a research consultant for ODI, UNICEF Peru, and the International Centre for Research and Policy on Childhood (CIESPI/PUC-Rio). I am also an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and I have taught at various academic levels at Birkbeck (University of London), the University of East Anglia, UCL and the State University of Rio de Janeiro.

I currently contribute as a referee for the journals Climate & Development, Childhood and Children & Society. I was also a contributing author in the latest Amazon Assessment Report.

Research interests

I am particularly interested in the generational impact of complex societal issues. My research is primarily qualitative and adopts both decolonial and political ecology lenses. My most recent project explored the unforeseen impact of social protection on indigenous families in rural Amazonia, and the cascading effects of climate change on children’s livelihoods. I have also worked with youth political participation, the specific risks facing children on the move in Latin America and the Caribbean, and policies targeting income-poor and street-connected youth in Brazil.

I am currently interested in understanding the social risks stemming from weather changes and the relationship between poverty and environmental degradation. I am passionate about age- and culturally-sensitive research and have experience using an array of methods with families, children, and diverse stakeholders.

Teaching interests

I am working on a new undergraduate curriculum in Sustainable Development at the OU.

I am also eager to supervise students interested in social policy, environmental justice, childhood and youth, and Latin American and Caribbean development.
