‘Net Zero Skills and the Role of Universities’

The Open University is an official partner of Net Zero Week (1 – 7 July) and we are hosting an event on ‘Net Zero Skills and the Role of Universities’ on Thursday 6 July at 12 – 1pm.

In 2019 the UK Government legislated to reach Net Zero emissions by 2050. The transition to Net Zero represents a huge opportunity to secure livelihoods, enhance social justice, and improve the nation’s health and wellbeing. All policy aimed at realising Net Zero means having people in place with the right skills to deliver on it.

Universities and other education providers play a key role in the global transformation to net zero emissions, as they have the unique opportunity to build skills and also to champion climate research, knowledge and action in the wider community.

This event will be an exciting discussion on how green skills and career pathways can be embedded into every sector, to help us meet our climate targets and ensure all people thrive in a zero-carbon economy.

The event will be a 60-minute panel discussion held online (MS Teams) and the panel will consist of Dr Victoria Hands, Director of Sustainability (host), Prof. Stephen Peake, Professor of Climate Change and Energy, Dr Freya Wise, Visiting Fellow, Ramla Khan, PhD Student in School of Environment, Earth and Ecosystem Sciences, and Charlotte Bonner, CEO at Alliance for Sustainability Leadership in Education (EAUC).
