Writing Talk: working with the words of others

Dates
Tuesday, March 16, 2021 - 18:00 to 19:00
Location
Online

In Creative Writing, practitioners might use oral history archives as a starting point for fiction, or collaborate with marginalised groups to co-author non-fiction narratives and uncover stories. In this Open University seminar, hosted by the Institute of English Studies, two writer-researchers will describe their experiences of working with the words of others.

The free event will be hosted on Zoom, and features two presentations, followed by a panel discussion.

Claire Hynes, University of East Anglia, will speak about her engagement with oral histories for her writing project, Room, which includes research into her Antiguan family past.

Erica Masserano, University of East London, will discuss her work with CityLife, a public engagement project in which writers process the life stories of London elders into creative non-fiction.

This seminar is part of an Open University series – ‘The Personal as Political’ – which considers the strategies used by writers to engage with individual or public politics in today’s restless world.

Information about the other seminars in the series, which take place throughout Spring 2021, can be found on the Contemporary Cultures of Writing website, here.
