Empireworld: 'In Conversation with Sathnam Sangera'

As part of the cross-faculty seminar series in collaboration with the Black and Ethnic Minority Staff Network and the Centre for Empire and Postcolonial Studies, we invite you to join us as we host best-selling author and journalist Sathnam Sangera to discuss his latest book Empireworld: How British Imperialism Has Shaped the Globe (Penguin, 2024).

Following on from the success of Empireland: How Imperialism Has Shaped Modern Britain (Penguin, 2021), Sangera’s latest book shifts his focus away from the imprint of empire on Britain to consider how British imperialism has shaped the modern world. Grappling with topics from the establishment of tea plantations to environmental destruction, the book argues that an honest conversation about Britain’s history and legacies of empire is long overdue.

As well as authoring books on empire, Sangera has also made documentaries including The Massacre That Shook the Empire (Channel 4, 2019) and Empire State of Mind (Channel 4, 2021).

Sangera will be joined by Dr Katie Donington (Senior Lecturer in Black, Caribbean and African History). She is a specialist in the history and legacies of British transatlantic slavery.
