Description
Edward Bickersteth was an evangelical clergyman. Throughout his life he travelled overseas to report on the work of the Church Missionary Society around the world. He was secretary of the CMS from 1824-1831. He became rector of Watton in Hertfordshire but continued to promote the Society. Bickersteth was a close friend and advisor to Anthony Ashley-Cooper the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury. His son Edward Henry Bickersteth (1885–1890) became bishop of Exeter.
