Thomas Chandler Haliburton was a Nova Scotian politician, judge and author. He wrote several books on history politics and farming. In 1823 he published an emmigrant's guide to Nova Scotia to promote immigration to the area. He is regarded as the first Canadian best selling author of fiction and his most popular books featured the character Sam Slick. In 1856 Haliburton emigrated to England where he served as a Conservative MP for Launceston for six years.
