James Montgomery was a Scottish hymnodist, poet and editor. He was an abolitionist and supported several humanitarian causes which are often reflected in his writings. He wrote the popular Christmas Carol 'Angels from the Realms of Glory'. Montgomery settled in Sheffield where he was a respected citizen due to his philanthropy in support of humanitarian and religious endeavours.
