In October 2019 the Open University will launch its new level 3 module DD319 Environmental policy in an international context, known fondly by its acronym ‘EPIC’. In this session DD319 co-chair...s – David Humphreys and Petr Jehlicka – will talk about the module and how it was designed. The module sets out to explore the causes and consequences of environmental problems, why these problems are so difficult to resolve, and what our options are for the future. The module begins by considering climate change, which is arguably the most pressing environmental problem that humanity faces. There are blocks on international environmental agreements, natural resource management, political economy and sustainable development, before the module concludes with a block on ‘greening the future’, which examines some alternatives to contemporary environmental policy. The module is ideal for students working on environmental issues in a range of organisations. It also aims to equip students to consider how they can make a difference by contributing to a more sustainable world.
