This special event will honour the remarkable achievements of Gary Lightbody, the lead singer of the internationally acclaimed band Snow Patrol, and Anna Burns, the esteemed author of the award-winning novel, "Milkman."

The Open University is renowned for providing flexible and accessible educational opportunities to learners worldwide and has 8,000 students across the island of Ireland.  The selection of Gary Lightbody and Anna Burns as honorary graduates reflects their significant contributions to the fields of music and literature, respectively.

Gary Lightbody, recognised for his contribution to people and society and his exceptional talent as the frontman of Snow Patrol, has captivated audiences around the globe with his heartfelt lyrics and soul-stirring melodies. The Open University’s mission is to be open to people, places, methods and ideas, and that mission is exemplified by the actions and, most importantly, the impact of Gary Lightbody through his philanthropic work across his career. To open opportunities for songwriters, musicians and aspiring music professionals in Northern Ireland, Gary was instrumental in establishing the The Oh Yeah Centre a charity and social enterprise in Belfast formed in 2007 to support the music industry in Northern Ireland.  In 2019, Gary established The Lightbody Foundation to help local and community-based charities in Northern Ireland provide life enhancing services to citizens in need.  Gary has also addressed many high-profile events to highlight social issues, particularly mental health, poverty, homelessness and the need for politics to work for people in Northern Ireland.

Remarking on his honour, Gary Lightbody said: “I am very honoured to receive this award from The Open University and I’m looking forward to celebrating with all the graduating class on the 9th of June. Well done for all the hard work you have put in to get your degrees.”

Anna Burns, the celebrated author of the critically acclaimed novel "The Milkman," has showcased her remarkable storytelling prowess with her unique and evocative style and is being recognised to pay tribute to her exceptional literary achievements. Her work delves into complex themes and vividly portrays the human experience, leaving an indelible impact on readers worldwide. Burns' literary achievements have earned her numerous accolades, including the prestigious Man Booker Prize, and her talent continues to shape contemporary literature and inspire aspiring writers.

Anna Burns said; “I am delighted to receive this honour from The Open University, a wonderful institution that offers education to the world. The Open University has greatly enriched and changed the lives of so many people, including individuals from my own past who tell me they would never have thought of pursuing the process of further education. I could identify. In our environment then, you weren’t expected to get a degree and so your mind simply wasn’t open to considering it. Well done, Open University, for facilitating such a positive seismic shift in outlook. “

The Open University in Ireland’s Director, John D’Arcy, expressed his delight at the selection of Gary Lightbody and Anna Burns as honorary graduates, stating, "We are honoured to recognise Gary Lightbody and Anna Burns for their outstanding contributions to the fields of music and literature, people and society, respectively.
