Student Story: The Power of Credit Transfer

Nick, from Belfast, had completed two years of a Physics degree when he realised he had a passion for Computing and wanted to change track. The university he was studying at didn’t allow him to change degree or include Computer Science modules. As a result, he felt stuck.

That’s where The Open University (OU) came in.

“The flexibility of the OU is what appealed to me. It allowed me to study a broad range of modules that covered topics such as computing, statistics & design.”

Nick put a pause on his studies before using a credit transfer to start his journey with the OU. Working three days a week, he was initially worried that it might be too much, but he soon found out that the OU’s flexible learning and high-quality materials, helped ease him in.

“I had completed 2 years of a BSc Physics course. The OU allowed me to transfer 2 years of credit over to a Combined STEM BSc which allowed me to focus on my areas of interest (computing).”

“I had taken a year-long break from Higher Education before starting my BSc with the OU. The modules started at a pace which allowed me to get back into the world of education easily.”

“There was great support from module tutors. They provided excellent tutorials and some went above and beyond, proactively scheduling phone calls where they shared some great insights from their previous experience.”

OU study has an impact on Nick’s life for the better. He not only gained knowledge but also developed essential skills and attributes that have proven invaluable as he embarked on his professional career.

“It's made me much more disciplined and organised. Before my OU studies I struggled with these things and now that they're invaluable in the professional world. I'm very glad to have had the chance to improve them during my OU studies”

The hard work paid off for Nick who soon found himself a new job and career path.

“It's allowed me to get my ideal job in Data Analytics and the skills I've gained from the degree have prepared me well for the beginning of my career.”

When asked what his advice for anyone thinking of studying with the OU, he said: “Follow the study planners on the module websites. They're extremely well-paced and if you can follow that you'll have a great chance of scoring well in assessments.”

Nick is one of over 250 students crossing the stage at our Belfast Degree Ceremony in the Waterfront on Friday the 9 June. It’s a chance for him to celebrate his success and hard work.

When asked what his proudest achievement was so far, his answer was simple:

“Getting my dream job in data using my OU degree.”
